A SPECIAL BOOK AND WHISKY BOX

It’s not every day you welcome one of Australia’s most respected tailors into the gallery. But when Mr John Cutler OAM, fourth generation of the iconic J.H. Cutler tailoring dynasty visited us, the conversation quickly turned from craft to legacy.

What followed was a special commission rich in meaning and detail. A limited-edition series of bespoke boxes, designed to house the newly released book Making The Cut by David Dowsey and, concealed beneath, a fittingly elegant surprise.

  • Crafted from richly figured Burr Walnut and Macassar Ebony, the exterior sets a tone of quiet luxury. Framed with solid African black Ebony mouldings and resting on finely detailed moulded Ebony feet, the box has a strong almost architectural presence. Both grounded and graceful.

Inside, a lift-out bookrest, made from matching Burr Walnut, cradles the book. It’s a fascinating story filled with remarkable client tales, including the now-famous commission for a $50,000 Vicuna coat, the subject of another book, The Coat Trail.

Beneath the book, a hidden compartment can be revealed, lined in luxurious, deep brown leather. Precision-fitted, it houses Mr Cutler’s favourite Tasmanian Lark Whisky, alongside bespoke glasses and engraved Shagreen coasters. The floor of the compartment is finished with a lift-out panel, playful and personal, lined in embroidered J.H. Cutler pink silk, a nod to the fine tailoring traditions that run through the heart of this project.

Crowning the lid is a beautifully detailed, hand-carved medallion, cast in nickel-plated bronze and engraved with the elegant initials “J.H.C.” A finishing touch that speaks of refinement, legacy, and timeless craftsmanship.

This is more than a box. It’s a portrait in wood, leather, and bronze, crafted with care, made to be treasured, and designed to tell a story that’s still unfolding.
